Description

Sunderland born goalkeeper Billy Down was playing for Ashington when he was signed by Leeds United in July 1920, making his Leeds debut in their inaugural Football League fixture at Port Vale in August 1920, and being ever present between their sticks that first League season. However he only played once in 1921-22 as Fred Whalley took over goalkeeping duties, but he reclaimed his place in the team playing 36 matches during their 1923-24 Second Division Championship season, and a further 21 league games the following season in the First Division. After 101 games for Leeds he joined Doncaster Rovers in September 1925, making 52 appearances over 2 years at Belle Vue, before a move back to the First Division with Burnley in November 1927. He lost his place in November 1929 during Burnley’s relegation season, and after 82 games for The Clarets he moved to Torquay in the summer of 1930, but he failed to make the first eleven and returned to Lancashire with Wigan Borough that December playing twice for Wigan before returning to Ashington in 1931
