Catford born left back George Dumbrell started playing junior football for Botwell Mission in 1923, playing for Nunhead in 1924, Catford Southend in 1925, Cray Wanderers in 1926 and Dartford in 1927 before joining Third Division Brentford in 1928, for whom he made his Football League debut against Gillingham in January 1929. He played only 3 times in his debut season and 9 times in his second campaign but it was enough to persuade First Division Leicester City to sign him, and although mainly a fringe player at Filbert Street, he played 39 times for The Foxes before joining Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in November 1933.
He scored his only career goals for Bournemouth, both coming in a 4-3 win over Luton Town two days before Christmas 1933 when deputising at centre forward, but having played 7 times in December he only made another 7 appearances during the rest of the season, all at centre forward, and he left Dean Court to re-join Brentford, by now in the First Division, where he reverted to full back. However he only played 5 games through to March 1937 to add to his earlier 12 appearances, before finishing with professional football.
