Description

Kinross, Kinross-shire born inside left or centre forward Charlie Duncan began his football career with Kelty Rovers from where he joined Dunfermline Athletic in 1912 before heading to England to join Second Division Birmingham, making his Football League debut in a 3-1 win over Hull City in February 1913, Duncan scoring The Blues’ opening goal, but soon lost his place when Billy Jones returned to fitness. Although a fringe player during his time at St Andrews, he scored 9 goals in 24 appearances. Duncan also scored a remarkable 52 goals in the 1914-15 season for Birmingham’s reserve team as they won the Birmingham & District League title, before the advent of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football in England, and in 1915 he returned to Scotland to play for East Fife.

He joined Glasgow Rangers in 1916 and scored twice on his debut against Dundee that August, and a hat-trick in their third game against Dumbarton, netting 15 times in 25 appearances for The Gers during 1916-17 and finishing the season as the club’s top scorer before joining Third Lanark after the season end. In September 1918 he joined St Mirren and made 24 appearances for The Buddies before joining Clyde in May 1919. While a Clyde player, he was selected by The Scottish League for a representative match against The Irish League. The game took place on 26th October 1921 at Clyde’s home ground, Shawfield Stadium, and Duncan scored the third goal of a 3-0 win.

In 1923 he left Clyde to join Dundee and stayed another three years at Dens Park before, already in his late 30’s, finishing his career with a spell at Arbroath.
