Accrington, Lancashire born goalkeeper John Edmondson joined hometown Lancashire Combination club Accrington Stanley in 1901 from where he was signed by Second Division Manchester City, for whom he made his Football League debut against Arsenal in December 1902. Initially understudy for three seasons to Jack Hillman making just 12 appearances over that time, he took over the gloves in 1905-06 making 28 appearances, but moved to Bolton Wanderers in the close season of 1906, where he initially shared responsibilities with Dai Davies before becoming the principal goalkeeper from 1908.
Edmondson was ever present as Bolton won the Second Division Championship in 1908-09 and although immediately relegated they bounced back to the top flight immediately as Second Division runners up in 1911. He continued to play for The Trotters until the end of the 1914-15 season, indeed his final match of 259 appearances for Bolton was the 2-1 1915 FA Cup semi-final defeat to eventual winners Sheffield United at Ewood Park, however the onset of the First World War which forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915 effectively ended his career.
