Description

Stourbridge born wing half Ernie Edwards had been an amateur on the books of West Brom but came through into League football via Redditch Town, from where he signed for Second Division Birmingham City, making his Blues debut against Stockport County in September 1913. In two seasons before peacetime football was suspended due to World War One, he made 17 appearances for The Blues, but on the resumption of peacetime football he signed for Southern League Merthyr Town in 1919. A year later he joined Newport County playing in their inaugural Football League match in August 1920 against Reading, and making 36 appearances in their debut season before being ever present the following season. By the time he moved to Southend United in the summer of 1923 he’d already played 121 times for Newport. He had a further 3 years at Southend, scoring 5 times in 98 games before returning to the Midlands in 1926 with non league Dudley Town.
