Description

Annfield Plain, County Durham born right back Hugh Elliott began his football career with South Pontop Villa in 1920 and played for West Stanley before joining Arsenal in September 1921, spending 1921-22 on their books and on loan at nursery club Margate without making The Gunners’ first eleven. In June 1922 he joined Third Division (North) Durham City making his Football League debut against Southport that August, and he was a virtual ever present in his debut season for Durham, making 40 appearances. However having lost his place in October after 9 matches in the 1923-24 campaign, he made only one further appearance the following February in a defeat at Lincoln City, and joined non league Shildon in 1925. He returned to South Pontop Villa  in 1926 and finished his career playing for Usworth Colliery and White-le-Head Rangers in 1929.
