Buckley, Flintshire born outside left Jabez Evans began his football career with Buckley United after the First World War, during which he served in France with the Armed Forces, and joined Third Division (North) club Tranmere Rovers in the summer of 1922, making his Football League debut against Stalybridge Celtic in August the same year.
A regular in his first season at Preston Park, he scored 5 goals in 37 appearances but he lost his place in September 1923 and remained on the first team fringes, playing 5 more matches in 1923-24 and just once more the next season, in an FA Cup against Southport in November 1924, the only time he played in a first team match alongside Dixie Dean, before leaving Tranmere to join non league Mold Town in 1925 having totalled 5 goals in 48 appearances for Rovers.
