Description

A central defender or right half, King’s Lynn born Fred “Tiny” Fayers played at for St Albans City in 1907, joining Southern League Watford in 1908 as an amateur and making his debut that March at Bristol Rovers. He had already played for Hertfordshire and by May 1909 had made his England Amateur debut against Switzerland in Basel, winning 9 amateur caps over the next year, scoring three goals. By then he had joined Second Division Huddersfield Town as an amateur in May 1910 after 2 goals in 69 appearances for The Hornets, turning professional that November after having made his Football League debut at  Gainsborough Trinity in September 1910. He was a fixture in the Terriers’ team through to the First World War, scoring 18 goals in 164 appearances.

Following the resumption of peacetime football in 1918, Fayers signed for Stockport County, where he was ever present in 1919-20 scoring twice in 43 appearances, before being signed by First Division Manchester City, for whom he missed only 2 games in 1920-21 as they finished League runners up. However he lost his place in 1922 and only played once in 1922-23 (at Tottenham in March 1923) before joining Halifax Town after 5 goals in 77 appearances for City. He had a single season at The Shay playing 8 times for Halifax, whom he also coached.
