Riccarton, Ayrshire born wing half Jock Finlay started his professional football career on the books of Rangers in 1903 and moved to Airdrieonians the following year, where he established a reputation as a reliable performer and was awarded a Scottish League cap against The Irish League in February 1909. That summer he joined Newcastle United, at the time the dominant team in English football, making his debut at Blackburn Rovers in September 1909, but he couldn’t force his way into starting regularly for Newcastle, who won the FA Cup without him in his first season. He continued to play for Newcastle both sides of the War, and indeed started far more often in the seasons after World War One, playing his last game of in total 161 appearances in April 1924, already aged over 40, before retirement. He scored 8 goals for The Toon.
