Description

Newburn, Newcastle upon Tyne born left back Matt Forster began his football career with hometown junior club Newburn after the First World War, from where he was signed by First Division club Tottenham Hotspur in 1920, making his Football League debut against West Bromwich Albion in February 1921, the first of 7 matches he played in his debut season. He made only 4 further appearances the next season as Tottenham finished runners up in the League Championship before breaking into the first team on a regular basis from April 1923, and he was an ever present during Tottenham’s 1925-26 campaign. After Spurs’ relegation in 1928 he remained with the club for two further seasons but lost his place in October 1929 and played 9 more matches in March and April 1930 before leaving Tottenham Hotspur to join Second Division club Reading in the 1930 close season after 244 appearances for The Lilywhites.

Forster suffered relegation in his first season at Elm Park and stayed two further seasons with The Royals, making 80 appearances for the club, before a transfer back to London to join Charlton Athletic in the summer of 1933. However he couldn’t force his way into Charlton’s first eleven and played just twice for The Addicks during two seasons at The Valley before he joined non league Bexleyheath & Welling in 1935 ahead of his eventual retirement.

NB in a match at White Hart Lane, Forster tackles Huddersfield’s outside right Joe Walter.
