Wombwell born wing half Jack Foster joined First Division Notts County from Worksop Town, where he had first played prior to World War One, making his Football League debut at Burnley in September 1919. However despite playing 35 times and scoring once, County were relegated at the end of the season and Foster joined League newcomers Luton Town, who were a very competitive side with the likes of Ernie Simms and Louis Bookman among their line up, and while at Luton they finished no worse than 7th in his 3 seasons, with Foster totalling 3 goals in 50 appearances. He moved to Hartlepools United in 1924 where he enjoyed a further 3 seasons on Teeside, scoring twice in 57 games before retiring from the professional game.
NB This photograph was taken on 7th February 1920 v Bradford Park Avenue at Meadow Lane, Notts lost the match 2-0. Foster joined Luton Town at the end of the 1919-20 season, which confirms that the 1920-21 label at the bottom of the image is incorrect. The three players standing “behind” were not part of the line up and have been “doctored” into the image.
