Fryston, near Castleford, Yorkshire born outside right Jabez Foulkes began his football career with Fryston Colliery in 1928, from where he joined Huddersfield Town in January 1930, where he stayed on their books for two years without making a first team appearance. He joined Third Division (North) club Stockport County in August 1932, making his Football League debut against Darlington that August. He immediately established himself as a regular in their first team and was an ever present in their 1933-34 campaign, scoring a career best 13 goals as Stockport finished third in the division for the second successive season.
Foulkes had two further seasons with The Hatters before joining Second Division club Bradford Park Avenue in May 1936 after 38 goals in 162 appearances for Stockport County, and he enjoyed two seasons at Park Avenue, scoring 3 goals in 50 appearances, transferring to Halifax Town in June 1938 after 3 goals in 50 appearances for Bradford. He had a single season at The Shay, scoring twice in 32 appearances before a move to Crewe Alexandra in June 1939, but he hadn’t yet made a first team appearance before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, which effectively ended his career.
