Description

Glasgow born centre forward George French played centre forward for Morton when they won The Scottish Cup for the first and to date only time in 1922, beating Glasgow Rangers in the Final. However French unluckily missed the Final match itself through an injury sustained in the previous match. He joined Morton after the end of the First World War and scored 112 goals in 182 First Division appearances for the Cappielow club, including 28 goals in 1921-22 and 24 goals in 1922-23 from 35 matches per season.

Described as “one of the best centre forwards of the day, a prolific scorer… he is an exceptional opportunist and difficult to dispossess despite his lack of inches”, he also scored 17 times in Scottish Cup ties including two hat-tricks, and he also scored twice against Aberdeen in the 1922 Scottish Cup semi-final.  Clearly a player of considerable ability, he was selected 3 times to represent The Scottish League making his debut against The Irish League at Ibrox in January 1921, scoring in a 3-0 win and he played 2 further inter-league matches against The Football League in March 1921 and March 1922.
