Sheffield born right half Sam Furniss played local football for Darnall Old Boys before the First World War and after the War he joined hometown First Division club Sheffield United in August 1919, but didn’t make his Football League debut until January 1921 when he played the first of only 3 matches for The Blades at Middlesbrough, and two further matches both against Preston North End in early February.
In August 1921 he joined Third Division (South) club Bristol Rovers where he scored twice in 96 matches over the next three seasons, being ever present in their 1922-23 campaign, joining Swindon Town in June 1924. Over three more seasons at The County Ground he only scored once and played irregularly in their competitive mid-1920’s team when they finished each season in 4th, 6th and 5th, before he then moved to Midland League club Boston Town in 1927 after 35 appearances for The Robins. He also later played for Scarborough in 1929, his last known club before his eventual retirement.
