Castleford, Yorkshire born goalkeeper Tommy Gale began his football career with hometown Midland League club Castleford Town in 1920 before joining Harrogate in 1921. He then signed for Second Division Barnsley in the 1922 close season making his Football League debut at Clapton Orient that August, establishing himself immediately as Barnsley’s principal glovesman, and only missing 2 matches in his debut season.
He played nine seasons for Barnsley, all of them in the Second Division, missing only two matches in 1925-26 and a single match in 1928-29before losing his place in January 1931, and after 308 appearances for The Tykes he joined Third Division (North) club Stockport County in the 1931 close season. He enjoyed two further seasons at Edgeley Park, making 60 appearances, before joining Midland League club Denaby United in 1933, his final known club before his eventual retirement.
