East Boldon, County Durham born winger Les Gallantree began his football career with Harton Colliery Welfare from where he joined First Division Newcastle United for £20 in September 1931, making his Football League debut at Liverpool in January 1933. Very much on the fringes at St James’ Park, this was his only appearance until August 1934, when he scored twice in 8 further appearances before the New Year for now Second Division Newcastle, but he was unlucky enough to break his leg.
Released, he joined Aldershot in May 1936 but only made 3 appearances for The Shots during 1936-37 before returning to the north east to join Gateshead in July 1937, and at the time was described as “small in stature, but strong and plucky”. However he scored twice in only 15 appearances during 1937-38 before finishing with professional football.
