Birmingham born inside right Dick Gardner began his football career with Evesham Town and spent 1933-34 on the books at Notts County without making their first eleven. He joined Birmingham & District League club Stourbridge in 1934, from where he was signed by Second Division club Manchester United in May 1935, making his Football League debut against Plymouth Argyle the same December three days before the New Year. He scored his only United goal on New Year’s Day in a 3-0 win at Barnsley, and played 14 matches for The Red Devils in his debut season as they won the Second Division Championship, however he only featured in 4 top flight matches in April 1936 as United were immediately relegated.
Gardner transferred to Second Division club Sheffield United in May 1937 but despite a goal in his second match for The Blades in a win over Luton Town he lost his place after 11 matches in November, and returned to Stourbridge in 1938, his career being effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939.
