West Hartlepool, County Durham born goalkeeper Tommy Gibbon began his football career with Hartlepool St Joseph’s in 1911 and played for Houghton Rovers in 1912, from where he signed for Second Division club Glossop in May 1913, making his Football League debut against Fulham that September but he played only 5 times for The Hillmen that season before moving to Southern League club Merthyr Town in 1914, however his career was soon interrupted by the First World War, the onset of which forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915.
Once peacetime football had resumed after the War, he joined Scottish League club Dundee in June 1920, playing 48 matches for The Dees before returning to England to join Luton Town in June 1922. He played 70 times for The Hatters over the next two seasons missing only 3 matches in their 1922-23 campaign as Luton finished fifth in the division, before joining Queens Park Rangers in August 1924, but he didn’t make the first team at Loftus Road and left later the same year to join Welsh Southern League club Mid Rhondda United. In 1926 he joined Southern League club Torquay United, helping them win the Western Section Southern League Championship in 1926-27 prior to their promotion to League status, and a year later he also played for Ebbw Vale before his eventual retirement.
