Description

Pilgrim’s Rest, South Africa born outside left Fred Gibson began his football career with Iona Star in 1906 and played for Bedworth Town in 1907 and Sunderland Royal Rovers in 1908,  before signing for First Division Sunderland from them in 1909, making his Football League debut at Tottenham Hotspur in March 1910, also playing a week later at home to Middlesbrough.

After just the 2 games at Sunderland he went back to Scotland and joined Raith Rovers in the summer of 1910, and after a season at Dunfermline Athletic in 1911-12, he returned to Raith, staying five years, before joining Heart of Midlothian in August 1917. He played 35 games for The Jambos including 29 League appearances, scoring 3 goals, before moving back to the Midlands to join Second Division Coventry City in 1919.

He played three seasons at Coventry as they struggled to avoid relegation, scoring 5 goals in 54 appearances, his last 5 City games (his only appearances of 1921-22) in April and May 1922 saw Coventry record two wins and three draws helping them once again narrowly avoid the drop, before he joined non league Nuneaton Town in 1922, playing subsequently for Warwickshire non league clubs Atherstone Town in 1923 and Collycroft United in 1924 before his retirement.
