Resuming peacetime football with Barnsley after the War in 1919, Gittins was a regular over the next seven seasons, also becoming club captain, making 272 appearances for The Tykes, scoring 7 goals, all but one of which were penalties. He was a near ever present in five of those seven seasons, helping Barnsley to finish in third place in the division in 1921-22 when they narrowly missed out on promotion to the top flight. After playing his final match for The Tykes in a defeat to Nottingham Forest in September 1926, he moved to join Third Division (North) club Chesterfield the following month and played 12 matches for The Spireites during the rest of the campaign before joining non league Wombwell in 1927, his last known club before his eventual retirement.
