Caergwrle, Flintshire born goalkeeper George Godding began his football career in local junior football prior to the First World War, playing for Caergwrle in 1913 and Crichton’s Athletic in 1914. After the War he joined Birmingham and District League club Wrexham and when they joined The Football League Godding kept goal in their inaugural League fixture against Hartlepools United in August 1921.
He missed only 15 matches in their first four seasons in League football and was selected for Wales twice in the 1922-23 Home Championship, making his debut in a 2-0 defeat to Scotland at Love Street in March 1923 and playing in a 3-0 defeat to Ireland at The Racecourse Ground, Wrexham, a month later.
He lost his regular place in Wrexham’s goal to Algy Wilkinson at the start of the 1925-26 season and despite a run of 7 further games from Christmas Day through the New Year, Wilkinson was recalled and Godding joined non league Llandudno Town in 1926, later playing for Oak Alyn Rovers in 1928 before his eventual retirement.
