Baildon, Yorkshire born wing half Cliff Godfrey began his career playing junior football with Manningham Mills in 1925 and then Guiseley in 1926 while also working as a miner. In 1928 he signed for Second Division Bradford Park Avenue, making his Football League debut against Reading in March 1929 and, despite spending six seasons at the club, he never fully managed to hold down a first team place. He was allowed to join Cardiff City in May 1935 after a single goal in 58 appearances over 7 seasons. At Cardiff he did manage to establish himself in the side, being ever present during the 1936-37 season, as well as captaining the side on numerous occasions. At the start of the 1937-38 season he scored his only goal for the club in a 4-1 win over Northampton Town. In July 1938, after 112 appearances for The Bluebirds, he moved to Walsall where he played in the last season before the outbreak of World War Two, scoring once in 31 appearances for The Saddlers before peacetime football was suspended. He continued to play for the club during the War but retired before the return of the Football League in 1946.
