Born in Dundee, centre half Donald Grant began his junior football career with hometown club Dundee Fairfield, from where he joined Heart of Midlothian,, where he was registered from September 1933 and made his Scottish League debut in a defeat at St Johnstone in March 1936. His next major match for Hearts was in their East of Scotland Cup Final win over St Bernard’s at Tynecastle in August 1936. He made his only other Scottish League appearance for The Jambos in a 4-2 win over Queen of the South at Tynecastle in April 1937 and again played in their East of Scotland Cup Final win over Hibernian a week later.
Grant moved to Aberdeen in May 1938 and made his Dons debut that November in a draw at Queen of the South. He made 4 appearances for Aberdeen during 1938-39 but joined the police in Dundee in 1939 before signing up to the R.A.F. during the Second World War, where he trained in Rhodesia as a pilot, ultimately flying Lancaster bombers over Europe, being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944 for successfully flying home a heavily damaged Lancaster Bomber.
