Keynsham, Bristol born wing half James Gray started his football career with Cadzow Oak in 1895 from where he joined Abercorn in 1896, spending three years with the Paisley club before joining Clyde in 1899. A year later he joined Royal Albert before returning to Clyde in 1902, his first English experience came when he joined Southern League hometown club Bristol Rovers in 1903.
He moved to First Division Aston Villa in the 1904 close season making his Football League debut against Stoke that September, but only played 7 times for Villa in their 1904-05 campaign before a move back to Scotland to join Glasgow Rangers in the summer of 1905. He was a regular in Rangers’ team for two seasons, making 52 League and Cup appearances. In 1907 he returned to the Southern League joining Tottenham Hotspur where he featured 16 times for them in the 1907-08 season, and played out his career at Leyton having joined them in the 1908 close season.
