Description

Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire born centre forward Arthur Green began his football career with Aberystwyth Town in 1897 and played for Ebbw Vale in 1898 before joining Southern League club Swindon Town in 1899, scoring twice in 4 appearances for The Robins. He was then signed by Aston Villa in August 1900 and spent 1900-01 on their books without making a first team appearance before joining Midland League club Walsall in 1901, and while with them he was first capped by Wales the same year, going on to win 8 caps over the next seven years, scoring three times for his country. He was part of their 1906-07 British Home Championship-winning team. From Walsall he signed for First Division club Notts County in May 1902, making his Football League debut at Stoke that September, scoring in a 2-0 victory.

Green immediately became a regular in The Magpies’ line up and also took their penalties, joint top scoring with Percy Humphreys in his first season at The County Ground with 16 goals. He top scored with 20 goals in 1903-04 including  all four goals with a brace of spot kicks in a 4-2 win over Blackburn Rovers in March 1904. He again joint top scored with Walter Tarplin in 1905-06 with 13 goals,

But in January 1907 he signed for neighbours Nottingham Forest after 59 goals in 142 appearances for The Magpies, and he immediately helped Forest win the Second Division Championship, scoring 6 goals on the run in as they won all but one of his 13 matches. Back in the top flight he lost his place after Christmas 1907 and made only a handful of further appearances before a move to Second Division club Stockport County in May 1909 after 16 goals in 38 matches for Forest.

However he managed just one goal in 7 matches for The Hatters, and dropped into non league football with Brierley Hill Alliance in 1910. He then moved around the Midlands non league circuit, playing for both Stourbridge and Kidderminster Harriers in 1912, and for Dudley in 1913, returning to play for Walsall the same year, and then finally playing again for Dudley and for Worcester City in 1914 before his retirement with the onset of the First World War, during which he served in the Armed Forces.
