Description

Eagley, Lancashire born centre half Sam Greenhalgh played junior football for Eagley in 1900 and Turton in 1901 before joining First Division Bolton Wanderers in 1902, making his Football League debut that September against Sheffield Wednesday. He was a regular in the Bolton team over the next 3 seasons and played in their 1904 FA Cup Final defeat to Manchester City but lost his first team place in September 1905 before joining Aston Villa in February 1906 after 5 goals in 103 appearances. He made 30 appearances in their 1906-07 campaign but re-joined Bolton Wanderers in September 1907 after 2 goals in 48 appearances for The Villains, staying another 7 seasons at Burnden Park and playing his last match for The Trotters in September 1913, having scored 20 goals in 278 appearances over both spells with them. He joined Chorley in 1914 before retiring from football.
