Wolverhampton born winger Joe Griffiths had been with non league Dudley Town before the First World War and signed for Southern League Bristol Rovers in 1919 on resumption of peacetime football. The following summer he joined Second Division Bury, making his Football League debut at Blackpool in September 1920, and playing 12 matches that season before joining Stockport County in January 1921.
He was a regular in the County team for most of 1921 and played 19 times as Stockport won the Division Three (North) Championship in 1921-22, however his appearances over the following two years were occasional and after 3 goals in 50 appearances for The Hatters he joined Tranmere Rovers in 1924. He played only 8 times for Rovers that season as they finished in 21st place in 1924-25, and this proved to be his last season as a professional footballer, retiring already aged 35.
