Description

Killamarsh, Derbyshire born inside left Arthur Groves began his football career with Langwith Colliery from where he signed for Third Division (North) club Halifax Town in 1927, making his Football League debut at Durham City that December. After 5 goals in 30 appearances for The Shaymen, he was signed by First Division club Blackburn Rovers in early 1929, and having made his first two top flight appearances in April he got into the Rovers line up from September, scoring 10 goals including a hat-trick in a win over Burnley at Ewood Park in November 1929. However Groves lost his place in December and continued to be in and out of the side for three more seasons before being signed by high flyers Derby County for £500 in the summer of 1933 after 26 goals in 68 appearances for Rovers.

He played the majority of Derby’s matches during his spell at The Baseball Ground, helping them to finish fourth and sixth in the League Championship before he was sold to Portsmouth for £1.500 in January 1936 after 18 goals in 69 appearances for The Rams. At Fratton Park he was never assured of his place except in 1936-37, when he only missed 8 matches during their season when they struggled to avoid relegation, and having lost his place in November 1938 took no part in their triumphant FA Cup Final run of 1939, being transferred to Stockport County in the 1939 close season. After playing twice for Stockport before peacetime football was abandoned in September 1939 due to the outbreak of the Second World War, Groves was still fit enough after the War to play for non league clubs Atherstone Town in 1945 and Heanor Town in 1946 before his eventual retirement.

His son, John Groves, played for over 200 matches for Luton Town and also played for Bournemouth in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

NB the photograph was taken before Blackburn’s match with West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on 19th September 1931, a match Rovers lost 4-1. In the photograph he has his hands on the shoulders of team mate Tom “Tucker” Turner.
