Description

Boldon, County Durham born left half John Haggan had played junior league football for Pelaw before the First World War and after the conflict he joined First Division club Sunderland in 1919, making his Football League debut at West Bromwich Albion on Boxing Day the same year. He played once more at Derby County early in the New Year, but never played for Sunderland’s first eleven again, spending two further seasons at Roker Park in the reserves.

Haggan joined Third Division (South) club Brentford in the 1922 close season making his debut in August, and he made 21 appearances during 1922-23, scoring against Gillingham in his 3rd game for The Bees, but having lost his place in September before returning in November, he was dropped after successive defeats in February 1923 and returned to the North East to play for non league Preston Colliery (which would become North Shields).

He subsequently had a spell in Canada with Hamilton United in 1924, playing for Usworth Colliery in 1925 and Washington Co-op Wednesday in 1926 before his eventual retirement.
