Houghton-le-Spring, County Durham born outside right John Hall began his senior football career with North Eastern League club South Shields in 1913, helping them to win the League in 1913-14 and 1914-15. However the First World War interrupted his career and after the War he resumed with South Shields before joining newly elected Third Division (North) club Durham City in November 1921, making his Football League debut the same month against Accrington Stanley.
A regular in his first season at Kepier Haughs, Hall scored 4 goals in 26 appearances during 1921-22, but lost his place in the Durham City first team in January 1923, playing only twice more either side of New Year in 1923-24 before leaving the club after 43 appearances. His subsequent football career is unknown.
