Chester born centre forward Jack Hallows began his football career with Liverpool Bluecoats and played for Willenhall in 1927 from where he signed for West Bromwich Albion, spending 1928-29 on their books without making their first eleven. He joined Kent League club Grays Thurrock United in 1929 from where he was signed by Second Division club Bradford City in November 1930, making his Football League debut against Burnley the same month, scoring in a 2-1 victory. In his third match for The Bantams he scored a hat-trick in a win over Reading and he ended his debut season comfortably their leading scorer with 19 goals in 27 matches.
The following season he scored 21 goals, including a hat-trick against Swansea Town on Boxing Day and five goals in a 9-1 demolition of Barnsley in their next match just after New Year, again finishing well ahead of the next goalscorer on the Bradford City list, although he then became less prolific, finishing the following two seasons behind Stan Alexander and Joe Spence respectively.
In 1934 he switched to the inside right berth, sometimes playing inside left, but wasn’t assured of a regular place in The Bantams’ eleven, and signed for Barnsley in March 1936 after 80 goals in 173 appearances for Bradford City. Never a regular for Barnsley, he retired from professional football in 1937 after 4 goals in 14 appearances for The Tykes.
