Birkdale, Lancashire born goalkeeper Billy Halsall played for Lyndhurst and Birkdale Working Lads before the First World War, and after the War joined his local professional club Southport, and when they were elected to the Football League’s newly formed Third Division (North) for the 1921-22 season, Halsall made his Football League debut against Hartlepools United in September 1921, soon making the gloves his own. He was in Southport’s goal for their famous 2-0 Cup giant killing of First Division Blackburn Rovers in January 1927. A regular over their first ten seasons, all in Third Division (North), he made 363 appearances for The Sandgrounders playing his last match in October 1930.
