Radstock, Somerset born Ernie Hammett attended Newport High School and Trinity College, Dublin, and played both rugby and football. As a footballer he was on the books at Wolves but joined Southern League Newport County as an amateur late in 1912, making his that December and captaining the team until the outbreak of the First World War. He played for the Wales Amateur XIÂ and also Treharris.
After World War One he concentrated on rugby union. He was a member of  the Pill Harriers Invincible side of 1919 and played for Newport RFC from 1919-20 to 1921-22. He also played for Blackheath and the British XV. He was invited to play for Wales but had accepted the day before to play for England and won 8 caps between 1920-1922.
He also played for Wales against England at Lawn Tennis.
