Goalkeeper Fred Hemmings, known as “Tich” began his football career with Corsham Town and Chippenham Town, from where he signed for Southern League club Swindon Town in the 1902 close season, spending his first three seasons at The County Ground as Swindon’s regular goalkeeper, being ever present in their 1903-04 campaign. However from 1905 with the arrival of Archie Ling and subsequently Len Skiller in 1909, Hemmings became Swindon’s understudy goalkeeper, serving Swindon in that capacity for the next seven seasons, during which he recorded 17 of his total of 106 appearances for The Robins before his retirement.
He made 3 appearances during Swindon’s victorious 1910-11 campaign as they won the Southern League Championship. The same season he made his only FA Cup appearance during those understudy seasons when he deputised for Len Skiller in Swindon’s FA Cup second round giant killing victory over First Division club Woolwich Arsenal, who they beat 1-0 at The County Ground in front of 15,000 spectators in February on their way to the FA Cup semi-final.
