Tottington, Greater Manchester born goalkeeper Tommy Hampson started his football career with Accrington Stanley in 1918, and joined Rochdale in 1919. The same year he played for Walker Celtic and South Shields, before joining Second Division West Ham United in May 1920. He made his Football League debut at Clapton Orient in January 1921 and spent three seasons as understudy to Ted Hufton, breaking into the team on a more regular basis from November 1924. He joined Blackburn Rovers in October 1925 after 79 appearances for The Hammers, but failed to get into their first eleven and had a brief spell in non league with Annfield Plain before joining Burnley in December 1925, making 6 appearances for The Clarets.
In October 1926 he returned once again to the north east to join Darlington, making 3 appearances, and played for non league West Stanley before joining Cardiff City in January 1927, where he was understudy to Tom Farquharson and made 9 appearances. He finally joined Notts County in May 1929 but only played once for The Magpies the following February before joining non league Nottingham Co-operative Dairy later in 1930.
Two older brothers were also notable footballers. Billy Hampson played for Bury, Norwich City, Newcastle United, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1924, and South Shields and managed several clubs, most notably Leeds United both sides of the Second World War.Walker Hampson played for Burnley, South Shields, Charlton Athletic, Hartlepools United and Chesterfield either side of the First World War.
