Description

Belfast born goalkeeper Jack Hanna started in junior football with Mountpottinger before joining Linfield in May 1909, with whom he won the Irish League in 1910-11, appearing for the Irish League in a 4-0 defeat by the Southern League at Upton Park in March 1911. Hanna signed for Second Division Nottingham Forest that July and made his Football League debut against Leeds City on 2nd September, the opening day of the 1911-12 season, and remained Forest’s regular ‘keeper for the next three seasons, making 102 appearances.

Described as a “fine, upstanding goalkeeper, very smart with both hands and an excellent close-range shot-stopper, often using his feet to good effect”, Hanna was limted to just two caps for Ireland thanks largely to the presence of long-time Ireland ‘keeper, Billy Scott. His first cap came in March 1912 in a 4-1 defeat to Scotland at Windsor Park, Belfast, and his seconnd in a 3-2 victory over the Welsh at Ninian Park, Cardiff, a month later.

In May 1914 Hanna moved into non league football Lancashire Combination club Barrow. After the First World War, Hanna joined Scunthorpe & Lindsay United of the Midland League in July 1919 and played for Workington in the North Eastern League in 1920 before his eventual retirement around 1922.
