Description

Bootle born goalkeeper Stan Hanson started his football career as an amateur on the books of Liverpool in 1933-34 and Southport in 1934-35, without making a first team appearance for either, also playing for Litherland in 1934. He turned down Aston Villa to sign professional forms for First Division Bolton Wanderers in October 1935, making his Football League debut at Huddersfield Town in September 1936. He didn’t make the goalkeeper’s shirt his own until February 1938 and soon after his career was interrupted by the Second World War, where he saw service in The Royal Artillery.

He returned to top-flight football in 1946 and stayed playing with Bolton until he was nearly 40, making his last appearance of 426 in January 1956, all of which were in the First Division (387) or the FA Cup (39). Perhaps most notably he was Bolton’s goalkeeper in the Matthews’ Cup Final of 1953, a season when he’d been ever present in the Trotters’ goal playing 8 FA Cup ties including the Final. When he retired from football after a brief spell at Rhyl in 1956 he returned to Bolton as coach of the reserve side as well as running the post office near Burnden Park.

He was the younger brother of Alf Hanson of Liverpool and Chelsea.
