South Bank, Middlesbrough born inside right Dick Hardy began his football career with South Bank East End from where he was signed by Third Division (North) club Hartlepools United in 1931, making his Football League debut against Barrow in March 1932. Initially employed at inside right by Hartlepools, and mainly used there throughout his six seasons at the club, Hardy also occupied every position across the front line and half back area except outside left, displaying considerable versatility.
Never a prolific goalscorer, his best season saw 13 strikes in their 1933-34 campaign, and in total he scored 27 goals for The Monkeyhangers in 168 appearances before a move to Bradford City in the 1937 close season. In 13 matches with The Bantams during their 1937-38 campaign, he bagged a brace in a 3-1 win over Rochdale in September 1937 but was used in 6 different positions, including two matches at outside left, but he was not retained and joined non league club Shrewsbury Town in the summer of 1938, his career being effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War just over a year later.
