Description

Woolwich, London born goalkeeper George Harford began his football career with Dover United in 1924 and played for Erith & Belvedere in 1925 and Bexleyheath in 1926, from where he was signed by Third Division (South) club Millwall in 1927, making his Football League debut against Luton Town that October, replacing incumbent goalkeeper Joe Lansdale. Harford missed only one match during the rest of the season as Millwall won the Third Division (South) Championship, but he was replaced by Lansdale after Christmas 1928 and played only 3 further matches for the club before a transfer to Luton Town in the 1929 close season after 59 appearances for The Lions.

At Luton he shared the gloves for two seasons with Claude Banes but only played once in 1931-32 with the arrival of James Imrie. But he found his way back into the first team in September 1932 and shared the gloves with Imrie during the campaign, but when Imrie departed for Doncaster Rovers, Harford was once again The Hatters’ principal glovesman before losing his place at the start of the 1934-35 campaign with the arrival of Joe Coen from Bournemouth.

Having not played a match during the season Harford transferred to Third Division (North) club Carlisle United in the summer of 1935 after 107 appearances for Luton Town, and he was the main goalkeeper in their 1935-36 campaign before losing his place in February 1936 after 29 appearances for The Cumbrians. He then moved to non league club Rhyl later in 1936, his last recorded club before his eventual retirement.
