Kimberworth, Rotherham, Yorkshire born outside left Len Hargreaves began his football career with Blackburn Wesleyans of Doncaster in the early 1920’s from where he was signed by Third Division (North) club Doncaster Rovers in 1925, making his Football League debut at Hartlepools United that November. After 5 goals in 9 matches during his debut season he got into the first team on a regular basis from the following September, and his form was such that he was signed by leading First Division club Sunderland in the summer of 1927 after 13 goals in 39 appearances for Rovers.
At Sunderland Hargreaves was a regular during their disappointing 1927-28 campaign, when they finished fifteenth in the First Division, but appeared in only 9 further matches the next season before being sold to Sheffield Wednesday in March 1929 after 12 goals in 40 appearances for The Rokerites. He played twice during Wednesday’s run in to winning the League Championship, scoring in a defeat at Manchester United, but was released and joined North Eastern League club Workington in the summer of 1929, where he remained for three seasons. He then returned to Football League action by re-joining Doncaster Rovers in the summer of 1932, scoring twice in 9 further appearances for Rovers. He spent 1933-34 with Luton Town but failed to make their first team before joining Southern League club Peterborough United, his last recorded club, in 1934.
