Holbeach, Lincolnshire born goalkeeper Alfred Harrison began his senior football career on the books of Nottingham Forest in 1893-94, without making their first eleven, where he was understudy to Dan Allsopp. He joined Second Division neighbours Notts County in 1894, where he was again understudy, this time to George Toone, and he made his Football League debut in a 2-1 victory over Bury at Trent Bridge in November 1894. This proved his only first team appearance and his career after leaving Notts County is uncertain.
NB It’s puzzling as to why George Toone was not in the team photograph from which this image is taken, as he was the regular Notts County goalkeeper at the time. It would be a fair assumption that the image was taken in November 1894 before Harrison’s only match for Notts County against Bury, however the playing line up isn’t the same so perhaps it was taken before a friendly on another occasion.
