Description

Rochdale, Lancashire born inside forward Ernest Hawksworth began his football career with Sudden Villa in 1911 and joined his local professional club Rochdale in 1912, playing for them until the suspension of peacetime football due to the onset of the First World War in 1915. After the War he signed for First Division Blackburn Rovers in March 1919, making his First Division debut against Preston North End in August 1920, scoring in a 4-0 win.

He was top scorer with 17 goals in Blackburn’s first post war season, which included 7 goals in the last four games of the season delivering three wins, saving Blackburn from relegation, and scored a further 14 goals in 1920-21, when he was only outscored by Percy Dawson, but he then spent three seasons on the fringes of the first eleven. In five seasons at Ewood Park he scored 34 goals in exactly 100 games.

He joined Cheshire League club Macclesfield Town in the 1925 close season, scoring 10 goals in 36 appearances, but returned to Football League action when he joined New Brighton in October 1926, scoring 3 times in 20 appearances in the 1926-27 season before his retirement at the end of the season.
