Description

Atherton, Lancashire born right back Bob Haworth began his football career with Howe Bridge in 1918 and played for Atherton Colliery in 1919, from where he signed for First Division Bolton Wanderers in July 1920, making his Football League debut at West Bromwich Albion in November 1921. He soon became a near automatic choice for The Trotters over the next ten seasons, winning a hat-trick of FA Cups with Bolton in 1923, when they beat West Ham United in the “White Horse” Cup Final, the first at Wembley Stadium, in 1926 when they beat Manchester City, and in 1929 when they beat Portsmouth, being one of four players to play in all three victories, the others being Dick Pym, Harry Nuttall and Billy Butler.

Noted for “enthusiasm, keenness, anticipation and sturdy defence generally”, he played 35 League matches in 1924-25 as they achieved their best League position, third, during his time at the club, and was an ever present for The Trotters in 1929-30, playing his last game for Bolton in February 1931. He joined Accrington Stanley in 1932 after making 357 Bolton appearances without ever scoring, and played 4 matches during the 1932-33 season before retirement.
