Bristol born left back Jimmy Haydon began his football career with Fishponds in 1918 and played for St Lawrence of Bristol in 1919 and Newton Old Boys in 1920 before signing for Third Division (South) club Bristol Rovers in September 1921, making his Football League debut at Aberdare Athletic on the last day of the year. He soon established himself as Rovers’ regular left back and missed only one match in their 1922-23 campaign.
He had ten seasons at Eastville and played his last match for The Pirates in April 1931, having scored 5 goals in 311 appearances, the first in a heavy defeat at Swansea Town in his debut season in April 1922, then the other 4 goals all coming in 1929-30, two from the penalty spot, before leaving the club in the 1931 close season to join non league Kingswood, his last known club before his eventual retirement. At the time Haydon left Rovers he had made the second highest number of appearances for the club by any player, behind only goalkeeper Jesse Whatley.
