Lanchester, County Durham born full back George “Tot” Hedley played for West Stanley in 1904 before joining First Division Middlesbrough, making his Football League debut at Aston Villa in November 1905. After 3 appearances for ‘Boro that winter, he joined non league Chester-Le-Street, playing 2 Scottish League games as a trialist for Heart of Midlothian in late January and early February 1906 before signing for Second Division Hull City in March 1906. He straight away became a regular in Hull’s first eleven and was ever present in 1906-07, and at the beginning of April 1908 he was bought by Leicester Fosse, on the brink of promotion to the First Division, after 2 goals in 84 appearances for The Tigers. He scored once in 38 appearances for Leicester, however they were immediately relegated from the First Division and Hedley joined Southern League Luton Town in the summer of 1909. A year later he returned to the north east joining Hartlepools United in 1910, playing for them for 2 years before joining Crook Town in 1912, subsequently playing for Jarrow Caledonians in 1913 and Brandesburton after the First World War.
