Description

Kelty, Fife born centre half George Henderson began his football career with Kelty Athletic in 1923 and played for St Bernards in 1924 before joining First Division Sunderland, making his Football League debut at Liverpool in October 1925. Although never a regular during his four seasons at Sunderland, he helped them to third place in the League Championship in 1926-27, when he scored his single goal for The Wearsiders in a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa in October 1926. After 49 appearances he moved to Second Division Barnsley in March 1929, where he soon became a regular fixture in their first eleven.

He was part of their team that shocked Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup in 1931, scoring in their subsequent 5th round defeat to Wolves. Barnsley were relegated from the Second Division in 1932 but Henderson, who became The Tykes’ club captain, helped them return two seasons later when they won the Third Division (North) Championship in 1934, Henderson scoring 3 goals in the campaign. He continued playing for The Tykes until 1937, when after 273 games and 12 goals he returned to Scotland and played for Cowdenbeath before his eventual retirement.
