Kelty, Fife born centre half Jock Henderson started his football career with Kelty Rangers in 1911 before joining Cowdenbeath Hibs in 1912, playing the same year for Scottish League club Bathgate. He moved to St Bernard’s in 1913 and came to England with First Division Manchester City in 1914 making his Football League debut at Bradford Park Avenue in April 1915, his only appearance for The Citizens prior to the suspension of peacetime football due to the outbreak of the First World War.

After the War was over, he resumed with Manchester City playing 4 times during the first half of the 1919-20 season, before joining Southend United in the close season of 1920. He was part of Southend’s team for their inaugural Football League fixture at home to Brighton & Hove Albion in August 1920, playing 25 matches in his single season with The Shrimpers before joining Southern League Mid-Rhondda United in 1921, spending a year in South Wales before he joined Gillingham in July 1922. At Gillingham he was a virtual ever present in his first season, scoring 9 times for the club of which 8 came from the penalty spot, and by the time he returned to Scotland to join Dunfermline Athletic in 1924 he had made 82 appearances for The Gills.
