Sunderland born centre forward Joseph “Jos” Hetherington began his football career with Sunderland Royal Rovers in 1914 prior to the First World War, and after the War played for Southwick, before signing for Second Division South Shields in April 1920, making his Football League debut against Sheffield Wednesday in February 1921. In October the same year he broke into the first team, remaining a regular for three seasons, before being signed by First Division Preston North End in June 1924 after 15 goals in 65 appearances for South Shields.
His 5 appearances for Preston during their 1924-25 relegation season proved his only top flight appearances during his career, and in November 1925 he moved to Lincoln City, where he also struggled to make an impact, scoring once in 5 appearances. He joined Durham City in September 1926 but didn’t make their first eleven, and in August 1927 he transferred to Norwich City, where he made his final League appearance against Coventry City that December, his only appearance for The Canaries. He joined non league Guildford City in 1928, but returned to the north east in 1930, playing first for Walker Celtic and subsequently for The Sunderland Employment Exchange before his eventual retirement.
