Walker, Newcastle born goalkeeper Tom Hetherington began his football career with Armstrong Whitworth in 1929 and played for Swan Hunter in 1930, Walker Celtic in 1931, North Shields in 1932 and Jarrow in 1933 before joining Second Division Burnley in December 1933, where initially he was an understudy to Robert Scott and Herman Conway, making his Football League debut at Bolton Wanderers in February 1934. He wasn’t selected for Burnley’s 1935 FA Cup semi final team, when Scott was preferred, but became Burnley’s preferred keeper in 1936-37, making 26 appearances before losing his place in March 1937.
He made only one further appearance for The Clarets the following season before re-joining Jarrow late in 1937 after 67 matches for Burnley, re-joining North Shields in 1938 before a spell at Barnsley, who he joined in February 1939, without making a first team appearance before the intervention of the Second World War. After the War he joined Gateshead for a brief spell in October 1946, making a single appearance in a home win over Tranmere Rovers the same month before his retirement.
