The grandfather of future 1960’s Swindon Town goalkeeper Tony, right half Freddy Hicks signed for Southern League club Swindon Town as an amateur in early 1911, making his debut, and only appearance in his debut season in an FA Cup tie at Darlington in February. He then made 4 Southern League appearances during their 1911-12 campaign, and he signed professionally in 1912, after Coventry City attempted to sign him – Coventry were later fined £10 for an illegal approach. Hicks made only one more first team appearance for Swindon in their 1912-13 FA Cup campaign. He signed for Midland League club Doncaster Rovers in 1914 and had a season at Belle Vue before the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football, during which Hicks also played once more for Swindon Town during 1915-16 in wartime league competition.
